Ryan Boyette speaks to The World Today on the BBC World Service about the plight of the Nuba people in Sudan.
Amnesty International is scheduled to publish a report on the silencing of journalists in Sudan in a crackdown by Khartoum’s authorities dating from the start of uprisings in North Africa in January 2011. Although attacks against freedom of expression are not new to Sudan, the pattern of harassment and intimidation of critics of the government has intensified since January 2011. Since May 2011, the Sudanese authorities have shut down 15 newspapers, confiscated more than 40 newspaper editions, arrested eight journalists and banned two from writing, seriously curtailing freedom of expression. Authorities have also infiltrated social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to crack down on activists who use these tools to share information and coordinate demonstrations and other public actions. Activists told Amnesty International that during interrogation by the NISS, they were asked for their email and Facebook passwords. Amnesty also found that members of the intelligence and security services have consistently misused legislation and press conduct codes to crack down on dissents. The BBC’s Andrew Harding reports from the Yida refugee camp in South Sudan.

Posted by Jon Lee Anderson on 3rd April 2012The Nuba people of southern Sudan live among a series of stone massifs west of the Blue Nile. It is said that there are ninety-nine tribes, with scores of languages between them—but they are culturally united. Nubans regard themselves as the descendants of the Nubians, the most ancient indigenous people of the region.

I was arrested for a second time in just a few years because of the atrocities being committed in Sudan. Why? The atrocities did not stop because of my arrest. President Omar al-Bashir, indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, was not sent packing from his hideout in Khartoum. Then, why? Easy: I am not able to do less. When I asked the world to heed my warnings, it looked away until it was too late,” he said. “From what I have seen in the Nuba Mountains, I fear that much the same scenario is unfolding there. Will the world listen this time around?” |
